No accountability is costing the Campbell County taxpayers....again. Print E-mail

The Campbell County Tea Party is in favor of efficiently run libraries. When a governmental authority takes your hard earned money illegally, you should know about it.

For years, the Campbell County Library has been raising your taxes illegally.

KRS 173.790 requires that a:

duly certified petition requesting an increase or decrease in the tax rate of a specifically stated amount is signed by fifty-one percent (51%) of the number of duly qualified voters voting at the last general election in each county in the district - see the statute here: http://www.lrc.ky.gov/KRS/173-00/790.pdf

Okay, maybe the library board didn't realize that this law existed. A group of concerned citizens (including Tea Party members) along with attorney Brandon Voelker brought this to their attention at the monthly board meeting earlier this week. The reaction you'd expect from a responsible board is an apology and a commitment to give the money back they took illegally. OH SORRY, THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. Responsibility from a non-elected governmental board only happens somewhere over the rainbow. They are choosing to ignore this law and continue raising your taxes ILLEGALLY. Don't expect to get an apology, just more tax increases. What can we do about it? Unfortunately, very little. You see since we didn't elect them, we can't vote them out either. The board has no accountability. The taxpayer's only recourse is to file a law suit. Read the story here.

You will notice that at the end of story the library director is attempting to make attorney Voelker out as the bad guy by saying: "if Voelker decides to move forward with the lawsuit, the library would have to retain an attorney and defend themselves, which would cost the taxpayers money." Once again, no accountability on the part of the library. If the director is truly concerned about our taxes, he'd put a stop to the illegal increases.

Our next higher authority on this is issue is Judge Executive Steve Pendery.
Here is his contact info to let him know that you don't approve of the library illegally raising your taxes:
