I am truly amazed when I hear people talk about the jobs created by the $5 million dollar library in Southern Campbell. There is a sucker born every minute, and lately, most of those think a new library will help the Campbell County economy.

An economic system is easily compared to your household or a business:

In order to bring money into your household, one or more of the residents in the home goes off to work, and in turn gets a paycheck. Money comes from outside of the household and goes into the household.

Similarly, a business sells goods and services to individuals or companies in order to bring money back to the business. Money comes from outside of the business and goes into the business

The opposite happens with public sector jobs. The new library will tax the residents of Campbell County (money comes from inside the county) to purchase goods and services outside of the county. As the library board admits, they hire employees outside of Campbell and in some cases, outside of the state. Further, it is likely that the majority of books, computers, desks, shelves, building materials, etc. will be purchased outside of the county. So, the money is going in the opposite direction than the other examples above. The money comes from inside the county and goes out!

It is safe to assume that the jobs created by the new library are detrimental to the county tax payers. Only a sucker believes that jobs created in the public sector help the economy.
